|May 05, 2006|
The UNC Department of Nutrition and Sanofi-Aventis will undertake a new collaboration to perform a study on the consequences of obesity and weight change using the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC) database.
"We are very grateful for this support from Sanofi-Aventis as it will enhance and complement UNC's fight against the global epidemic of obesity," said Dr. June Stevens, Chair of the Department of Nutrition, which is based in the School of Public Health and School of Medicine. "The UNC Department of Nutrition is delighted to collaborate with Sanofi-Aventis and Dr. Juhaeri on this work which is important to our understanding of the impact of obesity on health."
Dr. Juhaeri Juhaeri, Director of Epidemiology in Global Pharmacovigilance and Epidemiology at Sanofi-Aventis, earned a PhD (1999) in Epidemiology from the UNC School of Public Health.
ARIC is a prospective epidemiologic study conducted in four U.S. communities and designed to investigate the etiology and natural history of atherosclerosis, the etiology of clinical atherosclerotic diseases, and variation in cardiovascular risk factors, medical care and disease by ethnicity, gender and community. As noted by Dr. Stevens, "The ARIC database provides an exceptional resource for studies of the consequences of obesity. For many questions related to obesity and cardiovascular health, ARIC arguably provides the best data in existence today."
