Dr. Siega-Riz serves as program leader for the Reproductive, Perinatal and Pediatric Program in the UNC Department of Epidemiology. Siega-Riz uses a multidisciplinary team perspective as a way to address complex problems such as prematurity, fetal programming, racial disparities and obesity. She has expertise in diet methodology; gestational weight gain; maternal nutritional status and its effects on birth outcomes; obesity development; and dietary trends and intakes among children and Hispanic populations with over 170 publications. Recipient in 2007 of the March of Dimes’ Agnes Higgins Award for Maternal and Fetal Nutrition, she has served on four Institute of Medicine (IOM) committees – Reexamination of the IOM Pregnancy Weight Guidelines and its dissemination committee, Review of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Food Packages, and Standards for Conducting Systematic Evidence- Based Reviews. She presently serves on the Advisory Council of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and is a member of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
Dr. Siega-Riz is a Professor of Epidemiology and has a joint appointment in the department of Nutrition. She serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the School and Program Leader of the Reproductive, Perinatal and Pediatric program area in the Department of Epidemiology. She holds the T32 training grant for the program.
